Mongolia Edged Out by Indonesia, 2-3

After suffering a 0-3 defeat against Kyrgyzstan in the team's opening match of the 2017 Tsunami Cup, today Mongolia took on hosts Indonesia as both team's tried to keep their chances of winning the championship alive.

Indonesia's head coach Luis Millia kept the same 4-2-3-1 formation that earned a 4-0 victory over Brunei in the team's opening match. The consistency paid off, with Indonesia taking the early lead through a Gavin Kwan Adsit goal set up by Ricky Fajrin in the 7th minute.

Not long after, Indonesia doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute with a goal from Osvaldo Haay.

Mongolia kept battling and earned a penalty as a player was fouled in the Indonesian box. Mönkh-Erdengiin Tögöldör stepped up and slotted home the kick in the 37th minute.

Just as Mongolia thought that it would be entering the halftime break only one goal down, Indonesia's Montenegro-born Illija Spijajevic made a run at goal and was fouled in the Mongolia box. He stepped up to take the kick himself and made the score 3-1 in first-half extra time.

Mongolia showed some life in the second half, preventing Indonesia from adding to its tally while producing in the offensive third of the pitch. The team made another breakthrough in the 56th minute as a Mongolian player was fouled in the box by Indonesia's goalkeeper. Once again it was Mönkh-Erdengiin Tögöldör who slotted home the penalty, bringing Mongolia within a goal.

At the final whistle, the score remained unchanged with Indonesia edging out Mongolia 3-2 in a match that was highly influenced by penalties and field conditions.

Mongolia will take on Brunei on Thursday in a match to decide third and fourth positions. Indonesia will take on Kyrgyzstan who is currently tied on six points with the hosts but ahead on goal differential for the championship.
