Gantushig Swaps Futsal for Fussball in Germany

Young Mongolian Gantushig Erdene-Ochir moved abroad to Germany to study in the spring of 2023. He quickly latched on to local club TSV Obermelsungen after impressing head coach Torsten Lehmann in pre-season. He is currently competing with the reserve side in Hesse's Kreisliga A, the ninth tier league in the state.

Gantushig came through the youth system of FC Unaganuud, playing futsal. He was a key member of the squad that dominated the Mongolian Futsal League the past two seasons. In the first ten matches with the Foals, he was among the top scorers in the league with twelve goals in 2021/2022. By June of that season, he had accumulated at least thirty-two tallies.

Lehmann noted that Gantushig adapted to the game and integrated into the squad easily. His enthusiasm, work ethic, and futsal skillset were viewed as a positive to the team as it tried to escape relegation. He went on to make his competitive debut for the club on 19 March 2023 in a league match against TSV Spangenberg.

By May, the player had found his name on the stat sheet, providing an assist to Nicholas Licht on a well-worked goal against FSG Gudensberg to take an early lead against the fellow relegation contender. Ultimately, Obermelsungen would lose the match.

Gantushig scored his first competitive goal for the club on 15 October 2023 against SC Edermunde. The 84th-minute strike ended up being the game-winner.

How far and how long Gantushig can go in the German football league system is still to be seen. However, he is surely enjoying his time in the country while he can and will be a better player when he returns to Mongolia.
