Mongolian Clubs Learn AFC Challenge League Matchups

Although the tournament schedule and most participants were revealed nearly a month ago, Mongolia now knows its participants in the upcoming Preliminary Round matches of the 2026/27 AFC Challenge League following the recent conclusion of the Mongolian Premier League season.

FC Ulaanbaatar and Central Stallions FC will both face Taiwanese opponents as the MPL champions and runners-up, respectively in the AFC's third-tier competition. FCUB will face Taiwan Football Premier League runners-up Hang Yuan FC while Central Stallions faces champion Tainan City FC. Both matches will be played on 11 August 2026 away in Taiwan as the country's association sits higher in the rankings.

Mongolia was only guaranteed one spot in the competition, but were allocated another after no other clubs from the higher ranked associations of Laos, Brunei, or Timor-Leste met AFC licensing requirements.

Central Stallions undoubtedly faces the greater challenge against Tainan City who have won five consecutive Taiwanese league championships since 2020. The club easily defeated Mongolian silver medalists Khangarid FC 4 to 1 last season to progress to the Group Stage. The club has defeated other Mongolian opponents in recent seasons including a 3-0 win over Athletic 220 in the 2021 AFC Cup and splitting a two-leg series against FC Ulaanbaatar in the 2023/24 edition of the same tournament.

FCUB's opponent, Hang Yuan FC, is much more of an unknown as it has not qualified for a continental competition since 2019. The Football Premier League adopted its current branding in 2017 and since then the club has finished third in league three times and fourth a fourth two for its best performances prior to this season.

Winners of these two Preliminary Round matches will advance to the Group Stage. Doing so will likely see participants face at least three other higher-ranked opponents, experiences crucial to the progress of football in Mongolia.
